1. How can I get my school to use BecomeAlum?
Students, put us in touch with your academic advisor.
Advisors, contact us and let us provide you an online demonstration. Let’s discuss your advising challenges and see how BecomeAlum can help you reach your goals.
2. Can my Advisor see my Plan ?
If your university, college or department has purchased your BecomeAlum software as part of their advising efforts then your advisor has automatic access to view your plan.
If the student has purchased their own BecomeAlum account we can set up a free advisor account to give your advisor access. Just let us know the name and school email address of your academic advisor.
3. I forgot my username and password. Where can I look this up?
Each student’s username is their college email address. We do this for ease of us and to ensure uniqueness. If you enter your username in the login page and click “Forgot Password?” an email will be sent to your school email address with instructions on resetting your password.
4. How does the system know the degree requirements for my program?
IAS staff work with your college and department advising offices to clarify degree requirements and course availability. IAS staff works with the Registrar’s office to gather detailed course information. We also scan college and university databases for additional information that can assist you with your curriculum planning. IAS is very receptive and responsive to feedback, notifications and corrections.
Ultimately it is important that the student and advisor meet periodically to ensure degree completion and that whatever official “Degree Audit” process is used by the college to clear the student for graduation is checked early.
5. Can an Advisor change a students plan ?
Our basic philosophy is student ownership and therefore the student needs to make the changes. Part of the system does allow an advisor make and store comments which only the student and the advisor can view.
6. When a course availability changes, how does BecomeAlum show me ?
When a course availability changes the course(s) will be at the top of the Design View as well as shaded with an alert “Class not available” within the original semester planned in the Plan of Study view. The new availability will be reflected when the student takes action to move the course to another semester.
7. What if I want to change my major (or minor)?
Not a problem. The BecomeAlum system allows you to explore other majors and combinations of minors simply by changing the major or minor settings. Actually BecomeAlum is an essential tool in helping students to make the decision to change majors when they are mid-way through their degree. Planning out degree requirements to graduation can provide reassurance (or a dose of reality) of when the newly proposed major can be completed.
8. Can the system handle double majors (or multiple minors)?
Currently the system is set up to handle a combination of up to two majors and five minors. If we see an interest in increasing the capacity of the system we will do so.
9. Why is there such a big price break for purchasing the software for four years?
We are committed to assisting students of reaching their goal of graduating. Because this plan is intended to be a living and adaptable document we view the 4-year subscription as the best option for encouraging the student to use the software to help them to respond to curriculum changes and opportunities.
10. How can I contact an IAS representative?
Every page has a “Report a PROBLEM or QUESTION” link in the bottom right hand corner. Click on this link and send us an email.
