Dream, Plan, Realize

Christina McIntyre - President
Christina has worked in academic advising at Virginia Tech for the past 14 years. Working with students to provide advice and direction she identified that students need tools to provide structure to their academic planning. She is a member of the National Academic Advising Association (NACADA), and National Association of Fellowship Advisors (NAFA).

“Originally I found myself walking the student through the complete exercise of making a plan of study. While this was helpful I discovered that this was “my” plan for them. Each semester when the plan needed to be adjusted the student asked me for the plan and to tell them how to fix it. Shifting to a model where the student created the plan and then I provided them feedback led the student to take ownership and control of their educational progress. While giving feedback I discovered that most students made the same mistakes, such as planning courses in semesters they were not offered, planning courses out of order or sequence, missing a required course, and planning too few total credits. Any one of these planning errors could negatively impact the student’s graduation. While this information is available it is scattered in a variety of places and requires an insider’s knowledge to find this information. This led me to look for a software program that could manage these details and free up the student to focus on tailoring their curriculum to their specific situation. The software didn’t exist. I decided to team up with my husband, Jim, to begin to develop the concept.”
